Midwood High School

Brooklyn, NY
College Preparation

This four year high school in downtown Brooklyn has been recognized by various organizations for its longstanding tradition of academic excellence and community service. The student population reflects the urban community, which is mostly minority, yet it has succeeded in higher student achievement than similarly situated schools.

The school is broken into three houses: the Medial Science Institute, the Humanities Program and the Collegiate Program. All programs prepare students for both the Regents diploma, college study and aim to instill the core values of respect, responsibility and honesty its students. To account for the large student body, Midwood has a unique schedule, with classes held in three overlapping sessions – some students start at 7 a.m. and end at 12:30, some arrive at 10:45 a.m. and stay until 4:20 a.m.

While it spends less per pupil than schools citywide, Midwood’s students score higher on state exams, according to the New York City Board of Education. Eighty-three percent of Midwood’s Class of 2001 passed the Regents English exam, compared to 54.3 percent citywide. Eighty-nine percent passed Regents Mathematics compared to 57.3 percent citywide.

Midwood supports its students with an extensive tutoring program in all subjects – tutoring is available before the school day, during the school day or during their lunch period, by both peers and adults.
