High School Career Academies
College Preparation
High School Career Academies is a version of small learning communities placed within large urban high schools. The program offers the opportunity to build positive relationships with adults and develops career skills. Research show that students who enter into career academies, stay in school, graduate and continue the path to employment or postsecondary education. There are around 2,000 academies nationwide and growing. About 20 percent of academies are focused on health related careers.
The Allied Health Academy of Science & Technology at Crockett Technical Center in Detroit, Michigan, allows students to earn up to 22 college credits in its programs prior to high school graduation. Students can choose from several career pathways and learn entry-level skills in a variety of occupations including certified nursing assistant, pharmacy assistant, dental assistant, and sports medicine/physical therapy.
