    The Alliance for Excellent Education held a webinar to explore findings from a new study from the Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) at Stanford University that answers questions related to the challenges posed by new Common Core State Standards assessment requirements. It provides data on what states and districts currently spend on tests, showing that education systems currently spend more than is commonly believed. And it offers options for reducing costs for high-quality assessments.



  • WEBINAR March 20: Perspectives on the Future of Teacher Preparation in the Digital Age, Part II

    The Alliance for Excellent Education held a follow-up webinar on the examination of the future of teacher preparation that was initiated in December 2012. The first webinar in this series featured Ron Thorpe of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards; Barnett Berry of the Center for Teaching Quality; and Lynne Schrum, dean of the College of Human Resources and Education at West Virginia University, who discussed the implications of an increasingly global economy and complex world for training teachers.

  • EVENT February 28: A Twitter Town Hall on the Solution for the Federal Student Aid System

    The Alliance for Excellent Education, the New America Foundation, and a number of other stakeholders held a Twitter town hall that featured views and commentary from policymakers, researchers, students, parents, and other stakeholders. The conversation  focused on current problems with the federal student aid system and discuss the ways that these problems can be addressed.



  • WEBINAR February 26: Building on the Common Core State Standards to Improve Learning for English Language Learners

    The Alliance for Excellent Education held a webinar on the transition to Common Core State Standards and Next-Generation Science Standards presents both opportunities and challenges for the growing number of English language learners. A number of initiatives are underway to help English learners access grade-level content while building their language proficiency. Stanford University launched a two-year initiative—Understanding Language—to look at the language demands contained in the new standards. The Council of Chief State School Officers recently developed the Framework for English Language Proficiency Development Standards to help states understand the sophisticated language competencies English language learners will need to perform in an academic area.
