Stats That Stick: August 2, 2012

There’s some kind of pun about “sticking the landing” and Stats That Stick that should probably be made, but we’re too mesmerized by medal counts to get the 10.0 on that joke today. Please, take these Stats That Stick as a consolation medal.

Percentage of American colleges and universities “at risk of slipping into an unsustainable condition”: 28.

A report from Bain and Company and Sterling Partners says that American institutions of higher education are facing serious fiscal difficulties. According to the report, unless current trends change, our higher education system will be unable to “meet the diverse needs of the U.S. student population in 20 years.” The Huffington Post has more.

Number of California students set to have their Cal Grants eliminated or reduced: 14,500.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Student Aid Commission announced Tuesday to restrict eligibility requirements for the Cal Grant program. Many of the students due to lose aid are at for-profit colleges.

Amount of federal money awarded to states to cover AP costs for low-income students: $21.5 million.

Deseret News reports that the U.S. Department of Education has “awarded $21.5 million in grants  to 43 states… to cover the fees charged to low-income student for Advanced Placement tests.”

Number of communities to apply for Promise Neighborhood Grants: 242.

Education Week reports that 242 communities have applied for the Obama administration’s Promise Neighborhood Grants. 21 grants are expected to be distributed. The Promise Neighborhood Grants help “communities pair education with other services, including pre-kindergarten, health, and arts education.”
