Morning Announcements: May 2, 2011

The New York Times reports on Fern Creek Elementary School in Florida where more than 20% of students are homeless. According to the article, “There are 2,953 homeless students attending Orange County Public Schools, up from 1,463 in 2008.”

For one North Carolina school district, the stimulus money has run out and its affecting special education, Education Week reports.

The Los Angeles Times reports on two families in Los Angeles that have chosen very different paths for their children to achieve academic success.

In an op-ed in the New York Times, Dave Eggers and Nínive Clements Calegari, founders of the 826 National tutoring centers and producers of the documentary “American Teacher”, write about teacher attrition rates and how to attract and retain a talented teacher workforce. Also in the Times, R. Barker Bausell, a biostatistician and emeritus professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and author of “Too Simple to Fail: A Case for Educational Change”, writes about A New Measure for Classroom Quality.

The Wall Street Journal published several education related opinion pieces today and over the weekend including one arguing for school choice, another on the education documentary “Race to Nowhere”, and finally a piece advising, “Forget Harvard. If you want to earn big bucks and retire young, you're better off becoming a California prison guard.”
