Commissioner
Stanley G. Jones is Indiana’s commissioner for higher education. Throughout his professional career, Mr. Jones has pushed important educational policy issues to the front of the Indiana political agenda, serving sixteen years in the Indiana State Legislature and more than five years as a top aide to Governor Evan Bayh. Mr. Jones is credited as a primary architect of many landmark education policy initiatives including:the 21st Century Scholars program, a scholarship program aimed at increasing the number of low-income students attending and completing a postsecondary education; development of the state’s community college system; creation of Indiana’s Education Roundtable, a bipartisan consensus-building group of key policymakers; and Core 40, an effort to increase the rigor of high school coursework. In addition, he implemented a rigorous system to measure student performance, and adopted a new system for holding schools accountable for continuous improvement.
